Australians heading to Europe for Christmas — particularly those transiting through major Middle Eastern hubs — are being urged to check their travel insurance closely, with Smartraveller warning the ongoing conflict could trigger sudden flight cancellations and widespread disruption.
In a fresh update issued on August 12, the government’s travel advice service said the conflict continues to affect global aviation, with airlines able to cancel or restrict flights with little or no notice.
Smartraveller is currently advising Australians to avoid non‑essential travel to Level 3 destinations, including transit stops. Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are among the countries listed at Level 3.

The agency warns airspace in affected regions can close abruptly, forcing airlines to divert, delay or cancel services without warning.
Travellers are being urged to review their insurance policies before flying, particularly those relying on standard cover.
Comparison site Finder says many policies do not cover disruptions linked to acts of war — meaning travellers could be left out of pocket if their flights are cancelled due to conflict‑related airspace closures.
The ACCC also notes that when government‑imposed airspace restrictions prevent an airline from operating, consumer guarantee rights may be limited, reducing the protections normally available to passengers.
With Christmas travel demand surging and Europe a major drawcard for Australian holidaymakers, authorities say travellers should prepare for possible delays, diversions and last‑minute changes and ensure their insurance matches the risks.
